What’s Your Story?

I am a magnet for success and good fortune.

About ten years ago, I adopted this affirmation. It reminds me of my power to attract the people, things and circumstances that I want more of in my life. When I put my current office together in 2015, I wrote this on the bottom side of my desk (see the photo above). I also wrote it on a post-it note and stuck it to my computer monitor.

I fully recognize that a healthy dose of hard work is needed to make this affirmation a reality. I don’t see this phrase as a magic wand. Rather, it’s a touchpoint and a reminder of what is possible.

Since writing these words, I haven’t always felt like a magnet for success and good fortune. There have been quite a few times that I felt like I was attracting chaos and hardship. That’s life, right? We don’t get rainbows without the rain.

What’s important is that I have not and will not take down the post-it note. I will not refute this statement, even when presented with tremendous evidence to the contrary. I will continue to stand firm in the knowledge that my own perspective does more to shape my experience of this life than any external circumstances I might encounter.

This phrase has become part of the conversation in my head. When my saboteur voice tells me how hopeless everything is, my phrase of affirmation rings out clear and true. I am reminded that it’s my responsibility to make the best of bad situations, and usually, I’m able to shift to a better, more powerful perspective.

For me, the phrase “success and good fortune” has layers and layers of meaning. It’s about so much more than my financial and career outlook. “Success and good fortune” means that generally, I expect things to work out well. I anticipate successful outcomes to the big scary challenges I take on. It means that I have so much to be grateful for and so much good fortune, in all areas of my life.

I encourage you to take up this practice. Find a phrase that feels right and powerful for you. Let it be something that’s so meaningful, that you could speak at length about why you chose that phrase. Write it down. Post it where you will see it. Carry it on a piece of paper in your pocket. Repeat it so many times that it rolls off your tongue without conscious thought. Make it part of the story you tell yourself. I promise you, it will make a positive impact on your experience of this life.
